A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Cotswolds is a rambler’s delight with over 3,000 miles of public footpaths to explore and enjoy. The unique honey coloured stone adds a individual character to the undulating hills, crystal clear rivers and ancient woodland. The Cotswolds epitomise the rural English scene with towns and villages such as Burford, Bibury and Bourton on the Water, each standing on the banks of the Windrush and Coln rivers. Some of the smaller and less famous villages still hold their secrets such as unassuming country pubs that serve locally brewed beer and good food. Woodstock sits on the edge of the Cotswolds and existed before the Norman Conquest. It is better known today for Blenheim Palace home of the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill who is buried nearby at Bladon Church.
The Cotswolds is also home to towns such as Cirencester, a south Cotswold Roman town, and Cheltenham, one of Britain's finest spa towns. Impressive Regency architecture reflects the Cheltenham’s rich heritage with its famous Promenade and the fashionable quarter of Montpellier. The Cheltenham Racecourse complex houses the Cheltenham Hall of Fame and charts the history of the steeplechase from 1819 to the present day. Gloucester city provides yet more history with its cathedral, a building of outstanding architectural interest, and links to William the Conqueror who commissioned his Doomsday Book here.
