About the Region

Covering 900 square miles (2330 sq km), this unique and magnificent part of England is famed for its lofty peaks, tranquil lakes and, most of all, its sheer beauty - inspiring artists and poets throughout the ages. Loved by residents and visitors alike, Ambleside is one of the best known villages in the Lake District. It sits at the head of Lake Windermere, with the heart of the village just ten minutes' walk from the pier at Waterhead. For the adventurous, walks of varying difficulty surround the village. Wordsworth's home and garden at Rydal Mount are accessible via a pleasant walking track and then there are shops, art galleries and a cinema.

About four miles down the eastern shore of Lake Windermere lies the village of Bowness, only a mile from Windermere, but with a unique character. On sunny days the bay buzzes with boats and yachts and the village is colourful with strolling couples, children feeding the ducks and tourists enjoying alfresco meals in busy cafés.

Coniston sits a the foot of the peak known as 'The Old Man' beside Coniston Water. Boats sail between Brantwood Landing and the village while a trip on the elegant steam yacht Gondola is a step back in time and a treat not to be missed. Excellent walks in the area range from low-level strolls around the lake to intrepid hikes across the fell tops. There are dozens of other, often overlooked, places of interest in and around Coniston and every cottage we offer around here makes an excellent base for exploring these intriguing places.

Grasmere lies almost at the centre of the National Park and is an excellent starting point for excursions in the area. The village nestles in the high hills near one of the prettiest lakes and is well known for its association with Wordsworth and the Romantic poets.

Hawkshead is a popular village, always busy and generally traffic free and it is rewarding to explore some of the alleyways and 'yards', often ringed by pretty traditional cottages. Nearby Esthwaite Water is small and tranquil, mostly due to the few public access points to it. On the southern tip of Lake Windermere, England's largest lake, Lakeside is a peaceful, sleepy hamlet. While being a quiet destination, walks abound from here, and Lakeside is also home to the unique, freshwater 'Aquarium of the Lakes' where stunning displays bring you face to face with an array of life found in and around the Lakes.

The Langdale Valley is magnificent and picturesque, vast and sparsely populated: its vistas must be among the most photographed in Britain. Walks abound - ranging from long and strenuous hikes to short energetic strolls along low-level paths. Leading west from the valley is a road that crosses over two of the Lake District's steepest passes, Wrynose and Hard Knott, towards the Duddon Valley. Situated amidst breathtaking Lakeland Fells, Troutbeck provides a perfect location to explore some of the lesser-know parts of the Lake District, while still being nearby to some of the region's most popular locations. Our lovely selection of holiday retreats are ideally situated to take advantage of the beauty of the area. Many of the villages dotted about the area are truly rustic and beautiful with ancient stone cottages, sturdy farmhouses and remote churches all to be discovered and explored. Windermere is a busy little town and contains the only station for the Lake District at the end of a short single-track line that passes through some similarly picturesque villages. There are some lovely walks on the rolling fells behind the town. The village also serves as a local shopping centre with a good range of shops as well as a family run supermarket. Dining out is easy too, with a good mix of cafés, pubs and restaurants serving a range of dishes to suit all palates.
