About the Region

Welcome to Suffolk
Suffolk is a wonderful place to spend a holiday. Its rare mix of stunning coastline and idyllic countryside makes Suffolk a county people choose to visit year after year. With so much on offer, it’s hard to stay away.

The Heritage Coast
This is a very special area of open heaths, marshes and estuaries. You will find unspoilt villages, fascinating wildlife, quiet beaches and castles, as well as friendly pubs and excellent restaurants.

Southwold and Aldeburgh are gracious seaside towns that have barely woken up to the twentieth century and will certainly not be disturbed unduly by the twenty-first,

The Sandlings are the unspoilt coastal heaths that are of international importance for their flora and fauna. They afford endless opportunity for easy walking, bird watching, cycling, painting and much more.

Minsmere Nature Reserve is an RSPB flagship, and was the site of the successful reintroduction of the lovely avocet as a British breeding bird. There is a modern visitor centre, bird watching hides, nature trails and guided walks.

Walberswick village has been the haunt of artists for over a Century. More recently crabbing has become the main occupation for children of all ages, culminating in the annual August National Crabbing Championship.

Snape is best known for the old riverside maltings that offer a lively array of speciality shops, as well as the concert hall. This hosts the world famous Aldeburgh Festival every June, a prom season in August and a variety of entertainment throughout the year.

The Countryside

Move inland and the landscape unfolds into peaceful countryside. Lazy days can be had wandering the many historic villages, and the more adventurous can walk or cycle the endless winding lanes and footpaths.

The North of the county offers much for shoppers and those keen on history. Built around the ruins of an ancient Norman castle, Beccles is a quaint town with a selection of unique shops and perfect for those after a flavoursome bite to eat. The town still holds a weekly market, which dates back to 1383. Move further inland and find Bungay, once home to Catherine Suckling, mother of the famous seafarer Lord Horatio Nelson. Eye – boasting a wonderful guildhall, theatre and most impressively a Norman castle mound dating back to 1156 – is a popular heritage site. Here you can also explore the fifteenth Century church and its west tower, which is one of the finest examples England has to offer.

The South and Heart of Suffolk offers visitors everything from peaceful walks and cycling to the best antique hunting around. The range in architecture is remarkable – from the Georgian homes of Woodbridge to the medieval timber framed buildings of Hadleigh and Lavernham. Long Melford’s turreted brick Tudor mansion, Melford Hall, and the rare breed farm should also be on your ‘must visit’ list. Once home to Vikings, wealthy mill owners and Anglo-Saxon Kings, this area of Suffolk with its depth of history and rural beauty will not fail to delight.

The West of the county is a great location if a rural break spliced with some key visits is to be enjoyed. The splendour and excitement of Newmarket, home to horseracing, is a treat in itself. Lined with grand stud farms and training circuits, the wealth is apparent to all who visit. Bury St Edmunds, steeped in history with its medieval Abbey Gate, ruins and gardens, is a vibrant town waiting to be explored. Whilst in awe of these great towns, do not forget the unique offerings of smaller sites such as Brandon. On the banks of the Little Ouse River and flanked by heathland and forest, Brandon’s historic flint trades have created a place adored by locals and visitors alike.
