About the Region

The County of Sussex has more woodland than any other county in the UK, making it a magical place to explore. Nestle at the foot of the South Downs are many a picturesque village with tiny Saxon flintstone churches and timbered country pubs. The Ashdown Forest provides a wonderful venue for walking, horse riding and cycling. Further exploring will reward you with castles, beautiful gardens, National Trust properties and plenty of family attractions. Move towards the coast and you will discover the pretty mediaeval Rye standing on the River Rother as it winds its way to the sea at Rye harbour. Antique shops, potteries and ancient inns line the quaint cobbled streets, once the haunt of smugglers. Further along the coast lies the traditional English seaside resort of Hastings, a quaint old town with streets overlooked by ancient castle ruins sitting high on cliffs. Camber Sands provides good safe sandy beaches, while shingle beaches can be found at Winchelsea, Pett Level and Hastings.
