About the Region

Whitby & Area:
Standing at the mouth of the River Esk is the historic seaside resort of Whitby. Surrounded by rolling moors and a large sandy beach on one side with a rocky seashore full of marine life and fossils, Whitby is a joy to explore. There is plenty for the History enthusiast also with strong links to Captain James Cook, who learned his seamanship in Whitby between voyages, including the Endeavour, which has enjoyed several sucessful visits to the port. The horror buffs will be entertained also with Whitby’s historic associations with Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, who, as legend says, came ashore in Whitby, lived there and is buried there.

Robin Hood’s Bay & Area;
Surrounded by lofty cliffs and perched at the edge of a wide sweeping bay lies Robin Hood's Bay an old Yorkshire fishing village. Before sail gave way to steam this was once an important fishing community with one of the largest fishing fleets on the Yorkshire Coast. Explore the narrow, twisting, cobbled streets and alleyways, where baymen eluded the press gangs and smugglers secretly moved their contraband. These salty characters have long since gone but they left a huddle of red pantile roofed cottages which have changed little over time. Robin Hood's Bay sits amongst a spectacular landscape where from the southern-most headland of Ravenscar the eye follows round the sweep of the bay to take in the heather of Fylingdales moor and the rich pastures of farms dotted below.

Scarborough & Area:
One of England’s first seaside resorts, Scarborough and has been a Spa since 1622 when the therapeutic benefits of its naturally occurring mineral waters were discovered. By the 19th Century fashionable visitors flocked here to stay in magnificent hotels that competed with the very best spas Europe had to offer. Scarborough’s two large sandy beaches make it ideal for the family holiday. With its busy fishing harbour and yachting marina, its nightlife and full calendar of events Scarborough is an all-year round destination for holiday makers.

Ryedale & Area:
The rural district of Ryedale lies in the heart of North Yorkshire and covers 600 square miles of dramatic scenery. Picturesque villages and quaint market towns sit amongst, fertile valleys, grassy dales and purple moorland. Extending from the outskirts of historic York, Ryedale spreads east towards the coastal resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. It covers the rolling Yorkshire Wolds in the south and the dramatic North York Moors National Park to the north. Ryedale plays home to grand stately homes, historic railways, award winning museums and fun parks.

The market town of Pickering is the main shopping centre for the moorlands district. Its the 12th century parish church houses some fine murals that date from the middle of the 15th century. Pickering Castle, a 12th century structure on a Norman mound, was used by a number of Kings including Edward II, Henry II and Richard II, who was a prisoner here before being taken to Pontefract where he was killed.

York:
The historic city of York can boast of being the best preserved medieval city in the UK. Few cities can rival York for its completely medieval look with its maze of ancient timbered houses and narrow winding streets. The huge and magnificent Minster is the pride of York and towers over the city. It is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and houses some of the finest examples of medieval stained glass. York is a thriving city with many tourist attractions for the young and old offering theatres, museums, shops, pubs and restaurants to its visitors.
